UW Faculty Page

Professor Livne holds B.Sc. (1974) and M.Sc. (1982) degrees in aeronautical engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. (1990) in aerospace engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. He served in the Israeli Air Force in research and development roles and joined the faculty of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington in 1990. Over the course of his career, Prof. Livne has continued extensive collaboration with both industry and defense organizations.

John Berg

John Berg

Doctoral Researcher

John’s interests lie at the intersection of control theory and aeroelasticity, and his current research project is the investigation of limit cycle oscillations caused by control-surface freeplay in aeroelastic systems. He received his Master’s degree in aeronautics & astronautics at the UW in 2020 while studying multivariable stability margins and active flutter suppression. He is currently jointly advised by Professor Eli Livne and also Professor Kristi Morgansen in the Nonlinear Dynamics and Control Lab. When not doing research, he can be found running, playing soccer, or reading.

Alex Chin

Alex Chin

Doctoral Researcher

Alex currently works at the NASA Langley Research Center as a structural dynamics analyst in their structural and thermal systems branch. Prior to that he worked at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center where he was the structures lead for the X-56 program focusing on aeroelastic modeling and testing techniques. His research focuses on uncertainty quantification for aeroelastic modeling. He received his B.S. and M.S. in aerospace engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is currently pursuing his PhD in aeronautics & astronautics. Outside of research, his hobbies include training for triathlons and traveling.

Riley Johnson

Riley Johnson

Graduate Researcher

Riley is currently combining his interests in aerodynamics, structures, and controls.  He is jointly advised by Professor Kristi Morgansen in the Nonlinear Dynamics and Controls Lab and Professor Eli Livne in this lab. He studies active flutter suppression and gust load alleviation in a flexible wing. He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University in 2020. In addition to academic pursuits, Riley loves the outdoors anything soccer related.

Nick Mavriplis

Nick Mavriplis

Graduate Researcher

Nick received his B.S. in Aeronautics & Astronautics from the University of Washington and continued to a Master’s degree. His current research is focused on the low speed handling characteristics of supersonic airplane configurations. More specifically, Nick is involved with aircraft design, wind tunnel testing, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and aircraft stability and control. His other research interests include multidisciplinary optimization and air-breathing propulsion. Nick spends his free time outside skiing, mountain biking, and traveling.

Kuang-Ying "Eddie" Ting

Kuang-Ying "Eddie" Ting

Doctoral Researcher

Eddie focuses on the preview Gust Load Alleviation (GLA) system with a H-2 and H-infinity approach. His research interests are in emerging developments of integrated fields of flight science, control theory, and machine learning. Eddie is currently pursuing a Masters degree in aeronautics & astronautics and will continue to their Ph.D. program in Summer 2021. He received a B.S. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of California, Davis. He is jointly advised by Professor Eli Livne and Profesor Mehran Mesbahi.
