Don Norman on Wearable Tech

In an essay entitled “The Paradox of Wearable Technologies,” published in the MIT Technology Review, September/October, 2013, Don Norman writes about Google Glass.

He argues that cognitive science has demonstrated many times that we are fooling ourselves if we think we can actually multitask without negative consequences. It is just as distracting to talk, even hands free, on your cell phone while driving as it is to text or even be drunk.

Given that, as Google Glass developers start releasing more and more immersive applications, all bets are off about how this will affect our modes of communication. It’s already tough for any of us to stay focused and concentrate and be productive with the temptations of email, social media, and eight million other interruption generators on computers, tablets, and phones. 

Now our clothes are going to be yet another source of interruptions? We don’t want to end up in the dreaded technology loop:
