This event was sponsored by the City of Seattle and many organizations to make our region more age-friendly under criteria established by AARP and the World Health Organization called “The 8 Domains of Livability.” She spoke about findings from At-Risk and Underserved: LGBTQ Older Adults in Seattle/King County – Findings from Aging with Pride and moving forward to create an age-friendly Seattle and King County, embracing the resolve and resilience of our communities: elders, youth, all ages, and allies.
Equity: A Force for the Future of LGBTQ Aging. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at the Lifelong Equality International Workshop on LGBTQ Elderly Care at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in Middelburg, the Netherlands on May 24, 2017. At the international conference Karen spoke about the unique risk factors and strengths of LGBTQ communities, what Aging with Pride has learned so far, and where the field of LGBTQ aging research is headed.
Sustaining the Strengths of the LGBT Older Adult Community. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at American Society on Aging’s National Forum on LGBT Aging in Chicago, IL on March 22, 2017. She was joined by contributors to the Summer 2016 issue of Generations on LGBT Aging, and they discussed the LGBT aging landscape and what professionals across the field of aging need to know to build knowledge, skills, and cultural competency to meet the complex needs of LGBT older adults.
Advancing Research on Sexual and Gender Minority Older Adult Health within a Shifting Context. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen and Charles A. Emlet presented an invitational address at the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD on February 2, 1017. They discussed findings from Aging with Pride longitudinal study, lessons learned, advancing sexual and gender minority research within shifting context, and how to how to be strategic in moving forward.
Promoting the Health of LGBTQ Older Adult Populations, Specifically Communities of Color, Through Mobilization and Engagement. Shilpen Patel, Aundaray Guess, Katherine Acey, and Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented at The National LGBTQ Task Force’s 2017 Creating Change Conference on January 21, 2017. The workshop focused on community practice and engagement and utilizing research to promote the health and well-being of midlife and older LGBTQ populations, with specific attention to communities of color.
Military service and mental health: Differences between older transgender women and men. Charles P. Hoy-Ellis presented at the 21st annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research, on January 13, 2017 in New Orleans, LA. The poster presentation revealed that prior military service appears to be a protective factor in the mental health of older transgender men but not transgender women and underscored that social workers must understand the differential role of gender identity in the mental health of military service members.

The Unfolding of LGBTQ Lives: Key Events Associated with Health and Well-Being in Later Life. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented at the Gerontological Society of America 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 19, 2016. She discussed the four distinct clusters of LGBT older adults from the longitudinal research: Retired Survivors, Midlife Bloomers, Beleaguered At-Risk, and Visibly Resourced based on shared life events.
Race/Ethnicity and Health-Related Quality of Life among LGBT Older Adults. Hyun-Jun Kim presented at the Gerontological Society of America 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 19, 2016. Hyun-Jun discussed the demographic characteristics and health-promoting and risk factors between African Americans, Hispanics, and non-Hispanic Whites among LGBT older adults and the role of heightened LGBT-related discrimination.
Who Says I Do: The Changing Context of Marriage and Health and Quality of Life for LGBT Older Adults. Sarah Jen presented at the Gerontological Society of America 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 19, 2016. Sarah discussed how marriage is associated with advantages in socioeconomic resources, outness, some social resources, and social and environmental QOL, and that single LGBT older adults are at greatest risk and disadvantage across multiple domains.
Spirituality in the Lives of LGBT Adults Age 50 and Over. Anna Muraco presented at the Gerontological Society of America 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 19, 2016. Anna discussed how LGBT older adults experience their religious/spiritual identity and their participation which may be one of active participation, rejection, or adoption of new religious or spiritual path.
The Development of Evidence?based Practices: Expanding the Reach to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Older Adults. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen, Charles A. Emlet, Shilpen Patel, Hyun-Jun Kim, Anna Muraco, Charles P. Hoy-Ellis, Nancy Giunta, Glenise McKenzie, Sean Cahill, and Lisa Krinsky presented a preconference workshop at the Gerontological Society of America 69th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 16, 2016. This workshop illustrated how disparities, combined with aging and marginalization, increase the vulnerability of LGBT older adults in accessing culturally responsive and evidence?based practices.
Future of LGBT+ Aging. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at a Briefing for American Society on Aging members in New York, NY on September 21, 2016. Karen spoke to ASA members, stakeholders and the media about how to reduce disparities and promote equity in health and aging for LGBT older adults in services, policies and research.

Improving Health of LGBT Midlife and Older Adults: Findings from Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging and Sexuality/Gender Study. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at the Division of Gender, Sexuality, and Health at Columbia University Department of Psychiatry in New York, NY on June 28, 2016. Karen discussed the initial findings of the longitudinal study.
Enhancing Cultural Sensitivity with the LGBT Community. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented at the Washington Association of Area Agencies on Aging (W4A) in Leavenworth, WA on June 9, 2016. Karen’s presentation included best practices for providers who are partners with their LGBTQ clients to ensure the best possible provision of care, getting information about best practices when working with LGBTQ older adults, and a way for LGBTQ older adults to know the best providers for their individual needs.
LGBTQ communities: Addressing Dementia Awareness and Readiness to Serve. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at the 31st Annual Alzheimer’s Regional Conference – Discovery 2016 in Seattle, WA on April 15, 2016. Karen discussed the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community when dealing with medical providers, dementia diagnosis, treatment, and care and facility placement.
Perspectives from Gender and Sexual Orientation Health Equity and Aging of LGBT Older Adults. Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen presented an invitational address at Aging and Disability Services Advisory Council in Seattle, WA on February 12, 2016. Karen discussed the at-risk and underserved LGBTQ older adults in Seattle/King County and how to move forward with City Council funding, Generations Aging with Pride, training, peer support, and information and referral services.

Karen spoke about empowering communities with data, testing both high tech and low tech modalities, and strengthening intergenerational linkages.
Depression among transgender older adults: Differential impact of minority and general stress. Charles P. Hoy-Ellis presented at the 20th annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research in Washington, DC on January 17, 2016. He discussed findings including that both internalized heterosexism and perceived general stress contribute significantly to depression among transgender older adults.
