Ali Chase

Senior Oceanographer
personal website

Ali is a bio-optical oceanographer in the Air-Sea Interaction and Remote Sensing (AIRS) Department at APL. Her research interests are centered on understanding dynamics of phytoplankton in the ocean on varying temporal and spatial scales, with a focus on developing methods and tools that enable the use of large and complex datasets. Ali grew up in the woods of New Hampshire and completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Maine before moving west to the Seattle area. She loves being active in the mountains and on the water, and cooking homemade pizza.

Jonny Shen
Ocean Plankton Technician

Jonny is a member of the Marine Phytoplankton & Optics group with support from the Washington Ocean Acidification Center (WOAC). His work includes the analysis of phytoplankton samples collected during WOAC research cruises around the Puget Sound, via microscopic identification and quantification of different types of phytoplankton. Jonny participates in WOAC cruises to collect water samples, as well as to conduct analyses on board the ship. Jonny received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Washington, with a focus in marine ecosystems and oceanography.

Hannah Joy-Warren
NSF Office of Polar Programs (OPP) Postdoctoral Fellow

Hannah is a polar biogeochemical oceanographer in the Air-Sea Interaction and Remote Sensing (AIRS) Department at APL. She is an NSF Office of Polar Programs Postdoc Fellow and a UW Data Science Fellow. Along with Dr. Ali Chase, Hannah works jointly with Prof. Alison Gray at UW’s School of Oceanography and Dr. Andrea Fassbender in the Global Observations of Biogeochemistry and Ocean Physics group at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Lab. Hannah’s research interests involve combining in situ ship-based observations with autonomously collected data from Biogeochemical Argo floats to study the role of phytoplankton community composition in carbon fluxes. Prior to her postdoc at APL, Hannah was a CICOES Postdoctoral Fellow. After completing her PhD in 2021, Hannah was a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Apart from phytoplankton, Hannah loves taking her dog on bikepacking and kayak camping adventures, doing ceramics, playing the ukulele, and baking.

Claire Berschauer
Research Scientist

Claire leads the development of software tools and code to process, manage, and analyze data from the the Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB). This instrument captures images of individual phytoplankton and particles using automated flow cytometry and can collect up to 30,000 images per hour. This results in “big data”, which requires techniques including machine learning (Convolutional Neural Networks), cloud computing, and database management.

Max Danenhower
Research Intern

Max is a summer intern during June-August 2024 visiting from Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME). Max is working with data from the PACE satellite, with a focus on data processing tools and a pipeline to estimate phytoplankton-related metrics from high spectral-resolution reflectance measurements.
