Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine Clerkship

Anesthesiology Visiting Scholars Program (AVSP)

The Anesthesiology Visiting Scholars Program (AVSP) is a funded program designed to provide a month-long educational experience for outstanding fourth year medical students interested in Anesthesiology.

The AVSP is our only visiting student opportunity in 2024.

To be considered for this funded clerkship elective opportunity please apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Program (www.aamc.org/vslo). Please contact Jade Vance, APM Clerkship Coordinator, at anesstu@uw.edu with any questions.

Program

Students will spend four weeks at either the UW Medical Center or Harborview Medical Center participating in the care of patients in the general operating rooms. Other subspecialty services may be considered based on availability and interest. Students will care for a variety of patients undergoing both elective and emergent procedures at these tertiary care centers (including a Level I trauma center and the state’s largest Safety Net hospital). Medical students are introduced to the principles of anesthetic management, pharmacology of anesthetic agents, and physiologic response to anesthetic administration.

In addition to providing an enriching educational experience, students interact closely with residents, fellows and faculty, which lends itself to the unique opportunity to experience what it would be like to live in Seattle as a resident in our program.

A scholarship amount of $2,500 will be awarded to students accepted into our AVSP to help cover the costs of travel, housing, meals and application fees.

Eligibility

The program is open to all applicants interested in anesthesiology, especially those who do not have anesthesiology programs in their home institutions or who want to further their anesthesiology exposure. We encourage applicants who come from a broad range of those who are currently underrepresented in medicine.
