Advising Resources

Expanding Our Knowledge, Advancing Our ProfessionMany of us are members of national organizations such as these, either attending their conferences or regularly striving to abide by their standards, gaining valuable knowledge and education that expands our practice and enhances the UW student experience across all three campuses.
Exchanging education and best practices with colleagues across the nation and the globe enriches the UW advising and counseling profession!

UW Advising Groups

In addition to APAC, there are a number of other advising-related groups that you can connect with. These groups include:

Adviser Advocacy Group: the Adviser Advocacy Group is organized by the APAC Advocacy Chair and includes representatives from APAC, AEP and GPAA, as well as other advisers with an interest in adviser advocacy. The goals of the Adviser Advocacy Group are to create and maintain the Adviser Advocacy Resources page on the APAC website, advocate for adviser representation in university decision-making and coordinate a response in situations where university leadership may not have adequately understood the role of advising or the impacts on students and student services personnel of proposed changes.

Adviser Education Program (AEP): The goal of the Adviser Education Program is to contribute to the expertise of University of Washington advisers and to enhance their professional development. The program accomplishes this through support for training and professional development activities related to advising.

Graduate and Professional Advisors Association (GPAA): GPAA was created in 2015 as an official professional organization serving the Bothell, Seattles and Tacoma campuses. The purpose of GPAA is to define a space for graduate and professional advisors to collaborate, facilitate the sharing of best practices in graduate advising, represent graduate advisors to larger constituents, and identify and implement areas for professional development.

Online Advising Group: The UW Online Advising Group meets on a quarterly basis to identify opportunities and develop professional development resources in support of expanded advising resources using digital technologies. We welcome graduate and undergraduate advisers serving students on campus or online at the three UW campuses. Contact Aimee Kelly and Jenni Campbell to get involved.

Professional Staff Organization (PSO): All professional staff are automatically members of the Professional Staff Organization. The PSO highlights the essential role of, enriches the experience of, and serves as a resource for professional staff at the University of Washington. We strive to be a trusted and valued partner by seeking the alignment of university governance with the university’s stated values and the interests of the professional staff community; nurturing a culture of excellence at the University of Washington; and fostering a collegial environment among professional staff and with the greater university community. PSO has representation on all faculty councils, meets quarterly with Central UW HR, meets annually with the President, and has provided a voice for parking for professional staff and childcare opportunities.

United with Students: a group of UW advisers who engage the needs of historically marginalized students, considering holistically the intersection of their academic and personal selves. We seek to empower students via collaborations that prioritize resource sharing and amplification of student concerns. Through these and other actions that build a network of student advocates across campus, we aim to transform the university into one that benefits and serves the entire community.

University of Washington Advisers Facebook Group: a place for UW Advisers to chat, coordinate, and share ideas.
