CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS
The Coalition for Children of the Incarcerated, University of Washington Tacoma: Social Work and Criminal Justice Program, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, Post-Prison Education Research Lab, UWT Legal Pathways Initiative, Washington State Office of Public Defense, and Washington State Chapter-National Association of Social Workers invite you to present at our 2019 Conference by submitting an abstract for consideration to the conference committee.
Supporting Children of the Incarcerated, Their Families and Communities is the theme of the 2019 conference, and our challenge to you is to imagine ways in which a better world is not only possible but can be achieved for the millions of children who are suffering the consequences of their parents’ sentences because of America’s era of mass incarceration. This conference is a chance for us to have conversations about how we can help children, their families and communities overcome the challenges encountered when a mother and/or father is incarcerated, and how we can make life better for all, especially children.
The conference will be held at the University of Washington Tacoma, William Philip Hall on March 27, 2019.
What are we looking for?
We welcome presentations, panels, workshops, and posters that generate thought provoking discussion and critical analysis, innovative principles and practices that can be adapted in our work with children of the incarcerated, their families and communities and outside the box thinking about ways forward. We are particularly interested in submissions focused on the following streams: supporting children and parents in prison visits, improving the quality of parent-child jail visits, maintaining the parent-child attachment relationship, working proactively with caregivers and other family members to promote positive relationships with incarcerated parents, parental volunteering in schools post-incarceration, supporting children’s education while and after parents are incarcerated, parental pathways to college post incarceration, using Restorative Justice methods to heal familial relationships, legal access for incarcerated parents in family court, and community services and programs for children of the incarcerated. We are looking for original presentations and not ones that have been presented in the past.
Presentation Formats
There are different formats available for concurrent conference breakout sessions. Your abstract can be pitched as a collaborative or workshop session for 60 or 90 minutes or as a poster presentation.
Collaborative – 90 minutes
This is a session that you curate, comprising three 20 minute presentations and/or around interactions on the same or related topic with time for questions. Abstracts will also include an
explanation of how the combination of presentations you have selected will give participants multiple perspectives and deeper understandings on a particular area.
Workshop – 60 minutes
A more in-depth presentation focused on a topic related to one of the conference streams, encompassing a 45-50 minute presentation with time for questions and/or interactions.
Poster Presentations
Posters should address one of the streams which align with the main focus of the conference. It is important that applicants describe in their abstract how they intend to present their project in the poster format – what kind of visual materials they will use, for example, photographs, data samples, graphs, etc. The poster has to be an experience in itself for the one who looks at it – and should show awareness of the format of a poster session and its purpose to engage the viewer in conversation. We welcome abstracts for poster presentations from students.
Guide for Authors
Abstracts are limited to 100 words. The deadline to submit abstracts is December 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Please submit abstracts to Dr. Marian S. Harris at mh24@uw.edu and include your contact information as well as the name and contact information for all presenters in your workshop, collaborative or poster presentation. Notification of abstract acceptance is January 19, 2019.
