This event is hosted by the Faculty Assembly, in partnership with the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Office of Global Affairs, and Academic HR, to follow the recommendation made in the Faculty Affairs Committee (FAC) report. We’re grateful for the trailblazing work done by the FAC under the leadership of Dr. Sharon Laing.
This leadership forum is the second event of this series, after the International Faculty Welcome Luncheon last October. The event consists of celebratory remarks by EVCAA Harris, faculty panel, and Q&A.

Dr. Amos Nascimento is Professor of Philosophy in the PPE (Politics, Philosophy & Economics) program, former Assistant Director of SIAS, and former Chair of SIAS Faculty Council. Nascimento leads the Tri-Campus Interdisciplinary Cluster on Human Interactions and Normative Innovation (HI-NORM) at UW, Fellow of the Forschngskolleg Humanwissenschaften (FKH) at the University of Frankfurt (Germany), Visiting Professor of the Law School and Human Rights Research Center at the Federal University of Mato Grosso to Sul – UFMS (Brazil). His teaching, research, and community activities focus on the importance of “plurality.” He is the General Editor of the Series “Intercultural Perspectives on Human Rights” (Routledge).
Meet the Speakers
We’re excited about a panel of amazing speakers as below.
- Dr. Joyce Dinglasan-Panlilio (Philippines) is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Former Division Chair in the Division of Science and Mathematics within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, where she has been a member of the faculty since 2007. Her research interests are in the areas of environmental organic chemistry, focusing on understanding the fate and transport of emerging organic contaminants.
- Dr. Zhiyan (Juliet) Cao (China) is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Milgard School of Business. She currently serves as Associate Dean of the Milgard School and previously served as AACSB Accreditation Director.
- Dr. Raghavi Sakpal (India) is an Associate Professor in Computer Science & Systems and serves as an Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion in SET. Her current research focuses on using computational theories of Natural Language Processing and Intelligent Agents as tools to improve and investigate learning, and communication in social domains like Education, especially in a cross-cultural setting.
- Dr. Anaid Yerena (Mexico) is an Associate Professor in the School of Urban Studies, an architect, planner, and researcher who investigates public participation processes and activities related to housing and community development in the U.S. and Latin America. Her research has a strong community-based component that provides knowledge to advocate work alongside disenfranchised groups.
- Dr. Amos Nascimento (Brazil) is Professor of Philosophy in the PPE (Politics, Philosophy & Economics) program, former Assistant Director of SIAS, and former Chair of SIAS Faculty Council.
- Dr. Belinda Louie (Hong Kong) is Professor and Founding Faculty of School of Education. Her research focuses on Children’s and Young Adult Literature, English language learners, and educational robots. She is experienced in grant management. She has been the PI on many projects, about 10 million awarded by foundation, state, and federal agencies. Her commitment to building connections in the community helped her earn the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation. She and her husband have established the Professor Belinda Y. Louie Children’s and Young Adult Literature Endowed Collection at the UW Tacoma Library.
- Dr. Elavie Ndura (Burundi) serves as Vice Chancellor for equity and Inclusion & Professor of Education and a recipient of the PJSA 2011 Peace Educator of the Year Award. Her entire professional career has been dedicated to building communities of peace and nonviolence through education, research and scholarship, community outreach, and mindful communication. Her signature interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and practice that integrate intercultural peace education and conflict transformation have been featured in her six books, more than 30 book chapters and professional journal articles, and numerous invited presentations, workshops, and keynotes.
