Update on academic plan

Dear Faculty Colleagues:

I am writing to provide an update on the Academic Plan. Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jill Purdy and I presented information about it during the Chancellor’s Town Hall on January 24, 2019, and there is additional progress to share since then.

Many faculty contributed feedback on the Academic Planning Policy and Process (APPP), and we are very grateful The Executive Council (EC) discussed your feedback on November 30th, December 10th, January 11th, and January 28th and made many improvements to the policy as a result. EC voted on the APPP document on January 28, 2019 and it was adopted by majority vote (see attached file APPP20190128). This document will guide our academic planning for the remainder of this pilot year, and for future academic planning cycles. It is a living document that will evolve as we learn from our efforts over time.

In addition, EC voted to accept and disseminate the reviews by the Academic Curriculum and Policy Committee (APCC) on the preliminary new program proposals (first two pages of PNOIs) on January 28, 2019. In November 2018, APCC reviewed and ranked 10 preliminary new program proposals; proposals were ranked as high, medium and low. The full report of APCC’s assessment is attached (see attached file APCC PNOI Review20181114).

Academic planning is vital to fulfilling the mission, vision and values of our campus. Thank you to all who have contributed to the pilot process, and special thanks to the members of APCC and its chair, Menaka Abraham, for their work.

Thank you,
Ka Yee Yeung
Chair, Faculty Assembly
