Healing and Wellness Opportunities

A message from Department Chair Laura Lowes:

Watching the Derek Chauvin trail and waiting for a verdict is difficult and comes at a time when our energy is already low due to a multitude of other events. I’m writing to you today to encourage you to take the time you need to keep yourself healthy and well during these difficult times and to let you know that there are a number of health and wellness resources that are being planned for the coming weeks, in the aftermath of the Chauvin verdict. These will be announced centrally as they become available. In the near term, there are two opportunities specific for students.

Learn more about the events below and please take advantage of these and other University resources, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help and advice to CEE advising staff, UW staff or others.

Title: Healing from Witnessing Racism

  • Wednesday, April 21, 2021
  • 4 PM – 5 PM
  • Facilitated by Sashya Clark
  • Zoom link here.
  • Open to all UW students

Description: Watching the trial of Derek Chauvin was triggering, watching Daunte Wright get shot was traumatizing.  We experience and witness racism in so many ways.  And they take a toll on us.  This space is to process, listen and reflect on how bearing witness can weigh on us.  This space is to be in community because not having to be alone with that weight is part of how we heal.

Title: Restorative Justice Session

  • This session and space are intended for Black students.

Description: The session will be focused on helping support Black students by learning ways to practice restorative justice and self-care in the midst of challenging times. Participants will learn strategies to cope with racial and intergenerational trauma.
