CEE Undergraduate Weekly (2.9.22)
Hello CEE Majors –
SPR22’s registration starts Friday (Fri, 2/11) and we’ve been receiving a lot of questions about which classes you should take.
If you are still uncertain about your SPR22 schedule, please take a look at last week’s CEE UGrad Weekly (attached) which covers SPR22 registration in depth.
We also have a few new updates/clarification on last week’s email so make sure to note the information below as it may impact your SPR22 course choices:
- Make sure to refresh your degree audit both when planning and after you have registered. If you see courses that are not populating correctly, please let us know.
2.SPR22 Course Planning for Sophomores:
You will continue taking program prerequisites and graduation requirements as outlined in the sample 4-year plan BSCE degree sheet or BSENVE degree sheet.
You should try to complete the Physics and Chemistry courses in sequence by the end of your sophomore year, if possible, as the CEE Junior year is fully packed with required CEE 300-level courses.
You may also start/continue on 300-level CEE courses in SPR22 if you have completed prerequisites. CEE 317: Geosurveying, CEE 327: Transportation Engineering and CEE 337: Construction Materials would be great classes to add to your schedule.
If you have questions about which CEE 3XX courses might be a good fit for your SPR22, please consult with your CEE Adviser through an apt. or an email.
3. SPR22 Course Planning for Juniors:
The majority of Jr’s need to take two CEE 3XX classes in SPR22 based on their track/program as well as CEE 440: Professional Practice Studio (2cr). This will put most students between 10-12 credits, allowing space to take one additional course. Please note that we are also planning to host senior year planning sessions in April to help you get ready to register for AUT21.
- BSCE: For BSCE majors, this additional class needs to be CEE 378: Structural Analysis if you have interest in pursuing structures as your area of focus. Structural Analysis gets outstanding reviews from students and is an essential piece in fully grasping the material learned in CEE 377: Intro to Structural Design. CEE 378 is also required for the Structures/Geotech Capstone. If you know that you do not want to pursue structures, you can choose any other course that will work with your schedule. We recommend running a fresh degree audit to see which requirements you still need to complete. Making sure to check the prerequisites, you can plan to take a Technical Elective, an Upper Division Engineering & Science Elective, or a graduation requirement you have yet to complete (VLPA/I&S/DIV, MATH 307, Additional Science Course, PHYS 123, etc.),
- BSENVE: For BSENVE Majors, you can choose any other course that will work with your schedule. We recommend running a fresh degree audit to see which requirements you still need to complete. Making sure to check the prerequisites, you can plan to take a Technical Elective, an Upper Division Engineering & Science Elective, or a graduation requirement you have yet to complete (VLPA/I&S/DIV, Matrix/Linear Algebra, Additional Science Course, etc.).
4. Senior Year Planning: It’s never too early to start planning for your senior year and your CEE 4XX coursework.
Attached you will find a senior year planning email with step-by-step instructions/worksheets for completing your academic plan. Please let us know when you’d like us to review your plan!
(The BSCE/BSENVE sophomore and junior years are similar for most students so please use the BSCE/BSENVE degree sheets to help with your planning and course sequencing.)
5. Have a backup plan in place!
If you find that your first choice of class or section is full when you try to register, check the time schedule notes for that class to see how to get on a waitlist or receive an add code. We always try to accommodate those on the waitlist.
If you need registration assistance with a CEE course, submit the online CEE Add Code Request Form.
6. Additional Science Requirement
On your degree audit, you will see an additional science sub requirement list located under your Upper Division Engineering & Science Requirement. When you take one of these courses, it will satisfy this sub requirement and the credits will apply to your UD E&S Electives. However, if you have taken a different science course (100, 200 or 300 level) from one of these departments (ESS, ESRM, BIOL, GEOG, OCEAN, etc.), you may be able to petition it to satisfy the additional science requirement and possibly the UD E&S Electives as well. If you think this might apply to you, or you are looking to take one of these courses in SPR21, please send the course syllabus and description to ceadvice@uw.edu and we can take a look.
7. Additional Writing Requirement
Information on how to satisfy your additional writing requirement can be found on our CEE Student News Blog here. If you are trying to create a “W by arrangement,” we recommend trying to contact an instructor prior to the beginning of the quarter (For WIN21, it would be a good idea to connect now).
