CONSTRUCTION SCHOLARSHIPS: Beavers and Clark Construction Group Scholarships

Hi all,

Hope the first couple of weeks of class are going well for you! I am writing to let everyone know that there is a great scholarship opportunity for students interested in and involved with construction engineering. There are scholarships from the Beavers Charitable Trust [thebeavers.org] and the Clark Construction Group [clarkconstruction.com]. The awards will be TWO $5,000 cash scholarships from the Beavers and TWO $2,500 cash scholarships from Clark. Awards will be given in November. Here are the application particulars:

REQUIREMENTS

  • The applicant must have completed an internship (or have an ongoing one) with a construction company. This is the big requirement – it does limit the applicant pool quite a bit. I am aware of a number of students who meet this requirement (e.g., Clark, Flatiron, Granite, Stacy and Witbeck, Kiewit, Skanska, Walsh, Sellen, Mortenson, and more). If you have had a construction company internship, we will find you and get you to enter…so do it voluntarily first. 😉
  • The applicant must be in good academic standing. This means not on academic probation and no history of academic misconduct.
  • The applicant must fill out an application (shocking) here: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7048791/2022-Beavers-Charitable-Trust-and-Clark-Construction-Group-Scholarships [survey.alchemer.com]. This application involves you describing and writing about your intern experience. So, it takes some time to complete.

DUE DATE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH, 11:59 P.M.

QUESTIONS: ASK ME (STMUENCH@UW.EDU, OR VISIT ME IN MORE 133D)

If you do not know the Beavers and their Charitable Trust (I’m guessing you don’t), they sponsor my professorship and Julian Yamaura’s and it involves the owners and presidents of the largest and best heavy civil contractors in the U.S. The Beavers Charitable Trust is focused on assisting students entering the heavy construction industry. They are really interested in students that want to be in heavy civil construction. From my personal experience, these folks, some of the most influential in the industry, care greatly about students and their experience. Their scholarships are one of their ways of helping.

If you do not know the Clark Construction Group, they are the 13th largest contractor in the U.S. and the second largest GREEN BUILDING contractor in the U.S. They regularly hire interns and full-time positions from our department, they are a very progressive contractor that greatly values sustainability, and they are building great jobs right here out of their Seattle office (including UW seismic improvements [clarkconstruction.com], the Washington State Convention Center addition [clarkconstruction.com] and the Sea-Tac Airport International Arrivals Facility [clarkconstruction.com]).

Just so everyone is a winner, I will award a Starbucks gift card ($20) to all qualified applicants.
