Reminder, CEE500 Seminar Today at 3:30

Students and Faculty,

This week we will hear from another alumnus of our department, Dr. Haizhou Liu, associate professor in the department of chemical and environmental engineering at University of California, Riverside. Dr. Liu’s seminar will focus on the application of water chemistry principles to create fresh water supplies.

When/where: Thursday (10/27), 3:30/ BAG 154 (Bagley Hall)/ and Zoom (link below)

Autumn schedule with Zoom link: http://depts.washington.edu/watersem/

Abstract:

Harnessing Water Chemistry to Address Complex Water Challenges for a Thirsty World

Water scarcity has become a global crisis. This situation is exacerbated – and will continue to be so – by the global shrinkage of surface water sources. This seminar presentation will showcase research ideas focusing on the application of water chemistry principles to create clean and fresh water supplies, including municipal wastewater potable reuse, recycled water for agricultural irrigation, and metal corrosion control in drinking water pipes. Unique redox processes and photochemistry principles will be discussed during the seminar to highlight their applications in water engineering.

Dr. Liu’s Short Bio:

Haizhou Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Riverside. He receives a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at University of Washington, and completed a postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley before joining UC Riverside in 2013. Professor Liu’s research interests include water chemistry, water reuse and desalination, environmental remediation and electrochemistry. His current and recent research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Department of Interior, Department of Agriculture, and Water Research Foundation. Professor Liu is a member of several professional societies and currently serving on the International Water Association’s specialist committee on metals and toxic substances in drinking water. Professor Liu is selected as an Emerging Investigator in Water Engineering and Technology by the Royal Society of Chemistry, receives a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award in 2017, an Environmental Science & Technology Excellence in Review Award in 2018, and a Young Professional Award from International UV Association in 2019. His recent research is featured as cover images or editor’s choice by leading journals including Environmental Science & TechnologyEnvironmental Science: Water Research & Technology, and Envrionmental Science: Process & Impact. Professor Liu is a licensed professional engineer in the State of California.
