REMINDER: Construction Career Expo – November 1st, 2022

Hello!

The biggest construction job fair at UW will be held on November 1st, 2022 (next week Tuesday). It is open to CEE students and employers there expect to see LOTS of CEE students – more than CM students, in fact. If you are at all interested in construction, or would just like to work on your interviewing skills, please do not miss this career fair. There are more internships and jobs that come out of this career fair for our department than any other career fair (including our CEE career fair). I cannot emphasize this enough: this is the place to get internships and jobs in construction. (Did you know? 50% of all our department’s internships are in the construction field)

What: Construction Annual Career Expo

When: Tuesday, November 1st, 2022 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Where: HUB Ballroom

Why go: Get an internship, get a job in construction

Details: There are over 90 companies signed up for this. It will be packed with internship and job opportunities. They LOVE civil engineers at this career fair. Let’s swamp them with great students (you). The Department of Construction Management hosts this event, but CEE students are part of the event and highly encouraged to attend. Anyone at this fair would be glad to have you working with them, but here is a short list of heavy civil construction companies that build things other than buildings – they love civil engineers (and you will meet many CEE alums with these companies at the fair): American Bridge Company, Atkinson Construction , Clark Construction Group, Graham Contracting LTD, Granite Construction, Hamilton Construction, Keller North America, Kiewit, Manson Construction, Nova Group, Pacific Pile & Marine. Shimmick Construction, Skanska USA, Stacy and Witbeck, The Lane Construction Co., Walsh Group.

FRESHMEN and SOPHOMORES: e-mail me directly if you would like to meet me at the fair and get a personal introduction to the entire process (stmuench@uw.edu)

FRESHMEN and SOPHOMORES (again): You are qualified to do internships. Yes, you are. Ask Rachel Bottles, she did one after her sophomore year with Skanska on their L300 Light Rail project. There are many others that did so too.

JUNIORS: Between your junior and senior year is the IDEAL time for an internship. Grab this opportunity to lock up an internship before the holidays.

SENIORS: A fantastic time to be looking for full-time work, or, if you are going to graduate school, an internship.

What to do between now and Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. noon:

  1. Prepare your 1-page resume. If you want me to take a quick look at it, I will be in my office (More 133D) from 10-12 on Friday, 10/28.
  2. Print out copies of your resume to take with you to the career fair (standard paper is fine)
  3. Register on Handshake (do this via the Career Center @ Engineering web page 0 about ½ way down there is a Handshake info box)
  4. Once registered, go to the Handshake page on the Construction Career Expo. Do this through the LEARN MORE link at the top of the Construction Career Expo web page.
  5. Peruse the companies there and decide which you are interested in. Pick 5-10 companies if you’re not sure what’s appropriate.
  6. Research those companies on the web (what they build, where they build, where their offices are, etc.).
  7. Go to the career fair with copies of your resumes and an idea of whom you would like to talk to.
  8. Follow the advice on the attached document.

If you are in my (Steve) CEE 307 Class:

A selfie with a UW graduate that is representing a company at the career fair along with their degree and year of graduation earns ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITY points. So, free quiz points if you make a career networking connection at a career fair. Frankly, you should be doing this anyway. And…you get free points for it!
