Position Description:

The Seattle Department of Transportation’s (SDOT) Project Development Division is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student engineer to work in its Project Design and Delivery Group. This group is responsible for designing and delivering hundreds of crew delivered spot improvements projects annually.  These projects involve design of pedestrian, bicycle, transit and safety projects.

The intern will provide assistance and support to staff in the delivery of the various projects and will be trained by a Design and Delivery lead on how to create crew level designs on CAD and composing detailed Work Orders outlining project delivery instructions.  In addition, partnership and mentorship will be available by other existing interns.

 

Educational Benefit to the Student:

The intern will be provided with increasingly responsible tasks in the design and construction management of spot improvement transportation projects and will gain experience in:

  •  using field survey equipment to gather data,
  • using software in a professional environment (CAD),
  • completing designs that will be used by City crews or small contractors for installation, and
  • applying written communication skills composing Work Orders to crews and with a variety of staff at within the organization.

Job Responsibilities:

25% – Gather and compile field data and technical information from various sources using a variety of methods and processes; prepare a variety of summaries and reports. Field survey and photograph existing conditions.

25% – Assists in the design preparation and tasks for implementation of traffic safety, bicycle, transit, and pedestrian projects.

25% – Assist with maintaining up to date information on SDOT assets such as signs, markings, sidewalks, etc. in asset databases. Field verifies asset inventories for completeness and accuracy. Maintain and organize files and photos.

25% – Prepare drawings from surveyed info that was gathered in AutoCAD for various SDOT traffic projects, assist in preparation of work orders to crews for implementing the projects.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Experience using AutoCAD
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (intermediate experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Light survey and field inspection experience with ability to learn quickly (Level, measurement, photo inventory)
  • Strong analytical, organization, and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of transportation systems and facilities
  • Washington State Driver’s License required

Desired Qualifications

  • Survey experience (use of total stations, rod, level)
  • Solid skills with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Additional Information:

Start/End Dates:  Late March/Early April 2022 – May 31, 2023 (possibility of extension)

Schedule:  Intern will work 20 hours/weeks while school is in session.  40 hours/week during school breaks.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. (This is flexible depending on class schedule.  May work nights and weekends.)

 

Salary:  

Engineering students will be paid $23.14 – 26.05 according to class-standing (undergraduate/graduate students)
