About APWA:
We provide opportunities to develop relationships with local professionals in the field of public works to understand not only future career opportunities but also get direct leads on employment! We also host resume reviews, networking sessions, and tours to public works sites like the UW Power Plant and SeaTac International Airport.

The field of public works is vast and includes all aspects of civil engineering, environmental science and engineering, construction management, and public administration. The Washington State chapter of APWA is the 3rd largest chapter in the country and is very active in education, advocacy, and networking. Membership in the UW Chapter is also free!

Please join us for the first CEE Town Hall of this academic year, which will be held on Zoom from 4:00 – 5:00 on Wednesday Nov 30.

We’re continually working to make CEE into as welcoming and inclusive a community as we can. As part of this effort, we have been holding a Town Hall every quarter for the last two and a half years. The Town Hall is your opportunity to let the department know how things are going, provide suggestions for change and also hear about the actions the department is taking. Please join us!

12/2 Tour of the Ash Grove Cement Plant and Stoneway Concrete – Sign Up Closes on 11/23

Attention CEE Community,

On Friday, 12/2 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, members of the CEE community will visit the Ash Grove Cement Plant (see attached fact sheet) and Stoneway Concrete batch plant that is “next door”. Concrete is the most commonly used building material in the world. This is a great opportunity to see the process used to manufacture cement, the primary ingredient in concrete, at Ash Grove and then walk next door to see the process used to design, proportion and mix concrete for a variety of projects (pavement, buildings, residential construction, etc.). If you would like to join the tour please sign up here (identify yourself as a CEE 337 student or CEE student or affiliate, as appropriate) by Wednesday, 11/23.

David holds BSc and MSc degrees in Geology, Physics and Math from Brown University and a PhD from UW Earth and Space Sciences. David’s research involves the development and application of new methods to study dynamic Earth system components with real-world implications for water resources, sea level rise, and natural hazards. His current research uses satellite, airborne, UAV, and terrestrial remote sensing observations to understand the Earth’s cryosphere, with focus on mountain glaciers, seasonal snow, and ice sheets. Dr. Shean joined CEE in 2017 as an assistant professor, following his postdoc at UW’s Applied Physics Lab.

Attention CEE Students,

On Friday, 12/2 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, 40 members of the CEE community will visit the Ash Grove Cement Plant (see attached fact sheet) and Stoneway Concrete batch plant that is “next door”. Concrete is the most commonly used building material in the world. This is a great opportunity to see the process used to manufacture cement, the primary ingredient in concrete, at Ash Grove and then walk next door to see the process used to design, proportion and mix concrete for a variety of projects (pavement, buildings, residential construction, etc.). CEE 337 students have the highest priority for seats on the bus – since they have spent the last 7 weeks learning about concrete behavior, mixing, construction and application; however, there will room for other students to join the tour.
