Paid Holiday

Fellows are able to observe and are relieved from responsibilities during the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • President’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Labor Day
  • Veteran’s Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Native American Heritage Day
  • Christmas Day

Along with the holidays listed above, Fellows will be entitled to one (1) day of paid personal holiday per calendar year. Paid personal holiday does not roll over and must be used by December 31st. If not used, the paid personal holiday will be forfeited and can not be cashed out.

 

Vacation

Fellows will receive a minimum of twenty-eight (28) days (20 weekdays and 8 weekend days) of paid vacation at the start of each one (1) year appointment period.  DBP Fellows can schedule their vacation at their discretion through the year, but must do so at least 3 months ahead of planned vacation date (due to clinic scheduling requirements). Vacation days do not roll over.

 

Sick Leave

Fellows will receive seventeen (17) days (12 weekdays and 5 weekend days) of paid sick time at the start of each one (1) year appointment period. Sick time off is rolled over to subsequent training years while the Fellow is appointed to a UW GME training program.

 

Leaves of Absence

Parental Leave

Parental leave is defined as: up to four (4) months of leave taken after the birth of a child to the Resident, spouse or domestic partner, or because of the placement of a child with the Resident or domestic partner through adoption or foster care.

Parental leave may extend up to six (6) months, including time covered by the FMLA, during the first year after the child’s birth or placement. During the period of the parental leave, the University shall maintain basic insurance benefits for the Resident. The Resident will be responsible for maintaining any optional insurance coverage, other payroll deductions, and insurance co-payments.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

FMLA is a federal law which provides job protection and benefits continuation to eligible employees (APS 45.5). Residents are eligbile for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave during the applicable 12-month period. Reasons include taking care of a family member or one’s serious medical condition, the birth of a child or placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, or the need to support due to a family member being on active duty in support of a contingency operation. 

To qualify for FMLA, the Resident must be a working UW employee for at least 12 months of cumulative state service, and have worked for Washington state in a qualifying capacity at least 1,250 hours in the 12 months immediately preceding the date the FMLA would begin. The Resident is also eligible for FMLA if they have not previously exhausted their FMLA covered leave for the applicable 12-month period.

Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)

Residents may utilize benefits under Washington’s Family and Medical Leave (PFML) Program as defined in RCW 50A.04. Unlike FMLA, PFML is paid. To qualify for PFML, the Resident must have worked for Washington state for at least 820 hours (approximately 20.5 weeks). Residents may be approved up to 16 weeks of PFML. The actual amount of time approved for PFML will be determined by what the Primary Care Provider recommends to the Employment Security Department (ESD).
