DEPARTMENT NEWS

The ISOM Doctoral Curriculum Committee undertook a major effort over the past two years to revise and improve the PhD curriculum. Major revisions to the curriculum have been made to better reflect the state of the art in research, in additional, the student paper requirement has been reinforced and the area exam format and requirements have been revised.   As a part of these changes ISOM will now offer a number or rotating seminar courses focused on bringing cutting-edge research topics to the students.  Furthermore, starting in Autumn 2016, a new course: OPMGT 590: Stochastic Models for Research in Business and Management, will be offered on an annual basis.  This new course is a required course in both IS and OM programs.  The course covers foundations of stochastic processes and is aimed at Doctoral students across Foster who are interested in pursuing quantitative modeling research.

Pictured (left to right): Team Coach- Theresa Maloney, UW Team: David Yuan, Aysha Aijaz, Brian Moran
BITS sent a team of three to compete in the 2016 Competition on Management Information Systems (CoMIS) in Minneapolis, MN on March 30 – April 2, 2016.  Sixteen teams were chosen to represent their schools in this 24-hour case competition.  The UW Foster School team, consisting of Aysha Aijaz, Brian Moran, and David Yuan was tasked with addressing a virtual team challenge for the medical device company Medtronic.  The case asked them to consider the role of technology in a real world business problem faced by Medtronic’s global teams.  The Foster School team competed against students from across the U.S., including students from five of the top 10 ranked Information Systems programs.  Through their strong presentation skills and thoughtful recommendation, the UW team advanced to the lightening round where they and two other teams answered case related questions in front of their peers and a panel of judges.  The team did not advance to the final, but impressed other teams and coaches with their ability to confidently and articulately think on their feet.  Besides their strong showing in the competition, Brian, Aysha, and David connected with their peers, networked with Minneapolis professionals, and had the opportunity to visit 3M and General Mills.

SPOTLIGHT SEGMENT

Shunko_Masha

MASHA SHUNKO is one of our newest Assistant Professor’s at the Information Systems and Operations Management Department at the Foster School of Business.  Prof. Shunko brings a blend of industry experience from Deloitte headquarters in Tallinn Estonia and academic experience from Purdue University.  Spring 2016 marks her first teaching quarter at Foster so we decided to sit down and find out a little more about Prof. Shunko.

QUESTION:  What do you look forward to the most during your first quarter at Foster?
MS:  Interaction with students!  I actually look forward to it at the beginning of each quarter:  I am always excited to meet new students, learn about their experiences, and their viewpoints.  To simply figure out how operations knowledge can fit to complement their education in the best way.
QUESTION:  Describe your philosophy of teaching.
MS: My goal in teaching is to instill passion for learning and for solving problems for students.  There is never enough time to teach everyone everything they need to know in my class, so leaving the students with proper basics, the desire to learn more, and the skills to do it is the way to ensure they will get to where they want to be.
QUESTION:  What has been the biggest difference between West Lafayette and Seattle?
MS:  Wait, are you asking what is the difference between a village in the Midwest and a city on the West Coast?  What is the difference between being surrounded by corn fields and being surrounded by mountains and water?  What is the difference between a 5-minute commute and an hour commute?  That’s a tough one 🙂
QUESTION:  What is one of your favorite quotes?
MS:  “Don’t wait.  The time will never be just right.”
QUESTION:  If it was possible, where would you go in a time machine?  Why?
MS: I would take my family with me and go back to see my grandmother who unfortunately did not get a chance to meet my kids or my husband.  I would also love to take her back with me in the time machine to show her the beauties of our new home city in the Pacific Northwest.
