Getting Started with Debriefing Virtual Simulations
As we continue to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19 cases through social distancing, nursing programs are in the process of launching online virtual clinicals. Many faculty who have never facilitated in-person simulation are now required to debrief virtual simulations. Although many of the products available provide some guidance on debriefing, it can be overwhelming as an instructor to face a large, unstructured block of time and have the confidence that the session will be spent in rich learning. But the good news is that it is very much doable, and will actually feel familiar to instructors who are accustomed to teaching clinical post-conference. My 30 minute presentation below provides a practical approach for getting started with debriefing virtual simulations, using vSIM for Nursing as a model. I provide and overview of debriefing, specific questions and activities, and suggested agendas for one, two, or three hour debriefing. I hope this is helpful! Share your feedback and suggestions with me, Diana Buchanan, at dmtaibi@uw.edu.
