The primary purpose of this study is to understand how immune responses to injury (e.g. infection, trauma) might contribute to resolution of infection, shorter time on life support, and recovery. We have identified immune cells in the lung that might be related to shorter-time on the life support using lung fluid and blood collected from participants in this study. This study is one of the only studies in the world that collects lung fluid from critically ill participants, so your generous participation is leading to research that could otherwise not occur.
