Welcome back! Even our busy team took a break for Thanksgiving, so this week was a catch-up and preparation week for the team.

EMAR IN THE FIELD NEXT WEEK

Testing has been finalized! We are going to a high-school in Seattle on Tuesday to test EMAR and get as much data as possible! Hopefully the experience will teach us about changes that need to be made in design and programming, as well as learn how teens interact with EMAR. The goal of our field research is to elicit feedback from teens about what they like and dislike about EMAR as well as what they think of the new updated eye movements and script.

In preparation for this important testing session, all the teams are working hard this week to make sure everything goes smoothly.

In particular, the Feeling Heard (FH) team is working hard to figure out how to run the research in an unpredictable high school environment. A public space with actual teens is going to be much different from our controlled rooms in Sieg Hall at UW, so the team is working on several plans for the research set up depending upon how many students want to participate.  The research includes two phases (1) Individual teen interactions with EMAR and (2) a group interview about the experience of interacting with EMAR.

The PC team is also working hard to make sure EMAR works properly! Here are the high priority changes the team is trying to implement before next week:

  • Update the code for EMAR’s eyes
  • Fix touchscreen glitches
  • Fix audio and get matching voice with script working
  • Solder EMAR’s eye wire
  • Glue EMARs feet on a flat surface to add stability
  • Make sure the loose opaque paper filter fits over EMAR’s eyes

WHAT’S UP NEXT

Wish us luck in testing, we will be sure to update you on how our first session at a high-school goes! Stay tuned!
