Focus
The Pagulayan Research Group is dedicated to understanding factors that can improve neurobehavioral and cognitive outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our current focus is on the development and investigation of novel interventions for individuals who experience persistent cognitive symptoms after mild TBI (mTBI), with the goal of improving functional outcomes.
Current study:
Evaluating the efficacy of an intervention developed by our group, called On-TRACC (Tools for Rehabilitation and Cognitive Care). This 5-session rehabilitation intervention is designed to address the chronic cognitive difficulties that some individuals report after mTBI.
In particular, On-TRACC aims to:
- Improve understanding of the factors that affect cognitive functioning
- Equip individuals with cognitive compensatory and stress management skills
- Help individuals identify personally meaningful sources of motivation to engage in clinical care if they have untreated comorbid conditions that are contributing to cognitive difficulties
- Develop a personalized plan for long-term management of symptoms
Our current study, funded by the Department of Defense, is evaluating whether completing On-TRACC after being diagnosed with a mTBI in a VA Comprehensive Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation (CTBIE) clinic is associated with increased engagement in the care for comorbid conditions in year following the CTBIE.
