On-TRACC: A Novel Self-Management Intervention To Improve Long-Term Outcomes In Veterans With A History Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Diagram visualizing the overarching goal of the On-TRACC protocol: To bridge the gap between completion of a comprehensive traumatic brain injury evaluation and healthcare engagement. Study Description:

This study involves retrospective analysis of the electronic health records (EHR) of Veterans who completed a Polytrauma Comprehensive TBI Evaluation (CTBIE) at VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) during the time that coincides with the clinical rollout of a 5-week  rehabilitation intervention called On-TRACC (Tools for Rehabilitation and Cognitive Care). On-TRACC is designed to be a bridge between the CTBIE and engagement in care recommended by the clinician who completed the CTBIE. This study aims to evaluate the additive benefit of engaging in On-TRACC following a CTBIE compared to CTBIE alone.

About the On-TRACC intervention:

  • The front page of the patient workbook with the logo of the On-TRACC protocol: a winding road leading to an outline of the side profile of a human face with a colorful brain.

A 5-session values-based rehabilitation intervention developed by our research team to address persistent cognitive difficulties after mTBI

  • On-TRACC integrates principles of evidence-based treatments for post-concussion symptom management and behavior change, including:
    • Core Values
    • Psychoeducation
    • Cognitive Rehabilitation and Skill Building
    • Goal Setting and Ongoing Self-Monitoring
  • Pilot data indicates that participants with cognitive difficulties after mTBI report improved cognitive self-efficacy, quality of life, and daily functioning after completing On-TRACC.
