Brief telehealth cognitive rehabilitation following mild traumatic brain injury: A pilot study
Funding Agency:
Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions
Study Description:
This pilot study addressed the gap between significant individual and societal impact of post-mTBI cognitive concerns and evidence to guide interventions and treatment for these issues; particularly in the telehealth realm, a critical means by which access to care can be improved. The study addressed this gap by evaluating the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a brief (5-session) cognitive rehabilitation intervention that was developed for individuals with mTBI and was administered over HIPAA-compliant video-based telehealth technology. The development of this intervention was supported by a grant from the Department of Defense, with critical elements identified through surveys completed by clinicians and Veterans with a history of mTBI, and also the clinical expertise of the team. The intervention was designed to be delivered to 40 individuals with a history of mTBI (recruited from VA Puget Sound and the Rehabilitation Medicine Clinics at UW Medicine and Harborview Medical Center).

Development of a Brief Version of Compensatory Cognitive Training for Veterans with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Funding Agency:
Department of Defense
Study Description:
The goal of this study was to develop a treatment manual for a proposed brief cognitive rehabilitation intervention, as well as other materials necessary to conduct later RCTs. To develop the manual, information was integrated from multiple sources, including (1) a survey of Veterans with mTBI to assess treatment preferences, barriers to care, attitudes toward cognitive rehabilitation, and the nature of functional impacts on persistent cognitive difficulties, (2) a survey of clinicians with expertise in providing cognitive rehabilitation interventions in VA settings, and (3) a review of the empirical literature base centered around post-concussive outcomes and clinical care. The manual for the resulting intervention, called On-TRACC (Tools for Recovery and Clinical Care) was piloted on a small sample of Veterans. Post-treatment feedback was incorporated into the final version of the manual.
