Review: Does the Plot of ‘Tetris’ Fall into Place?

“They’ll make a movie about anything these days!” is what most of us likely said upon hearing that a movie about Tetris was being released. It’s been said before— and it’ll be said again— but the film industry is completely oversaturated with biopics and corporate/product origin stories right now. Seeing so many films of this same genre coming out at once makes it hard to get excited about any of them; they tend to come off as an inauthentic cash grab more than anything else. An entire film dedicated to an old computer game where you have to line up falling blocks almost sounds like a joke at this point. And yet, despite everything that should be working against it, Tetris manages to not only be a pretty solid thriller but also a pretty fun time.

Review: ‘Scream VI’: A Killer Addition to the Franchise

We’re certainly not in Woodsboro anymore. Scream VI finds our new protagonists have made the move to the Big Apple and are ready to leave the horrors of the previous year in their rearview mirror. But in typical Scream fashion, one doesn’t simply leave Ghostface behind.

Review: ‘Infinity Pool’: A Vacation that Goes off the Deep End

An affinity for the unsettling seemingly runs in the Cronenberg family, and Brandon Cronenberg’s latest work Infinity Pool certainly upholds this legacy. Failing novelist James Foster (Alexander Skarsgård) and his well-off wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are vacationing at a high-end resort located on a developing island country when they meet the mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth) and Alban Bauer (Jalil Lespert). The Bauers charm the Fosters into venturing outside of the resort grounds for some sightseeing in the countryside, off limits due to strict— and violent— government regulations. After a reckless mistake finds the couple in trouble with the law, they discover the depraved manner in which justice is served in this country.

Brenna Robinson’s Top 10 Films of 2022

I’m not sure I’m qualified to declare whether or not it’s been a “good year” for film. Like everyone else, I spent the first two years of the pandemic watching movies in my bedroom, so to have an entire year that felt almost normal– the theaters opening again, delayed projects finally getting released— is enough for me to count 2022 as a massive win. The fact that some of the new releases from this year have made their way onto my list of all-time favorites certainly doesn’t hurt either.

Review: ‘Weird: the Al Yankovic Story’ is a Refreshing Take on the Biopic

Weird: the Al Yankovic Story comes to us in a time oversaturated with biopics. Just in the past few months alone we’ve gotten Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant Elvis, and Andrew Dominik’s controversial Blonde. Weird director Eric Appel even credits the likes of Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman and Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody as being the driving forces behind getting his film green lit. However Weird stands apart from its predecessors in the biography genre.
