Ari Aster, one of the most exciting young directors working in Hollywood, has returned to the big screen with his contemporary western Eddington. The film follows asthmatic and disgruntled sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who is struggling with the state of America and Sevilla County at the height of the pandemic. Cross finds himself clashing with Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), the mayor of Eddington, a town at the edge of the county he’s sworn to protect. Cross views the mask mandates implemented by Garcia and the governor of New Mexico as a violation of personal freedom. Much to the chagrin of his wife, Louise (Emma Stone), Cross spontaneously launches a mayoral campaign in a last-ditch effort to wrest power from Garcia. Looming on the outskirts of town is a faceless artificial intelligence company, SolidGoldMagikarp, developing a data center that Garcia has promised to greenlight if re-elected.
