Review: ‘Saltburn’: Lost Minds and Lost Plots

Since its debut, Saltburn has proved to be very divisive. A film that has caused many online to say, “you either love it or you hate it.” The director of the movie is Emerald Fennell, who made her first feature film called Promising Young Woman in 2020. A film that would go on to receive three Oscar nominations, winning Fennell her first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Now in 2023, Emerald Fennell made her directorial return with the film Saltburn. A psychological dark comedy thriller, about a college student who becomes enamored with another student and his life of luxury.

Review: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ & The Burdens of a Dull Friendship

The Banshees of Inisherin opens by introducing us to the small island town of Inisherin. It is a quaint little place, with lush fields of greenery as far as the eye can see, and rainbows spread themselves across the small town’s perpetually overcast sky. Everything seems as-usual in this tight-knit community, until one otherwise uneventful weekday when Colm (Brendan Gleeson) doesn’t show up to meet his best friend Pádraic (Colin Farrell) for their ritual two o’clock trip to the pub. Pádraic goes looking for Colm, worried that something may be wrong with him, and upon finding him, Pádraic learns that Colm no longer wants to be his friend and demands the two immediately cease all contact. An abrupt, seemingly very simple, request from Colm quickly implodes on itself as the two men come to realize how inescapably intertwined their lives have become. As Pádraic insists on mending their friendship, Colm is drawn to increasingly desperate measures to ward off his presence, leading to rippling consequences for Inisherin as a whole.

Review: ‘Eternals’ Breaks the Marvel Formula, But Not Necessarily for the Better

After over a year of movie delays, Marvel is back on schedule. Only a few short months after the last theatrical installment (Shang-Chi, in September), the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with Eternals. Based on the characters in the Marvel comics of the same name written by Jack Kirby and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, Eternals follows a group of super-powered beings who have been on Earth for centuries.
