Pioneer Square is Seattle’s original city center dating back to 1852. The area was nearly totally destroyed in the Great Fire of 1889, but was subsequently reconstructed. Many of the original buildings survive today, with the area becoming Seattle’s first designated historic district in 1970. It is also Seattle’s oldest Business Improvement Area, and ongoing programs include beautification, business development and neighborhood advocacy.
