Japanese Government Graduate Student Research Scholarships

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students (either non-degree or degree students) under the 2020 Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship Program.

Scholarship benefits include: monthly stipend, airfare to and from Japan, and exemption of school fees for entrance examination, matriculation and tuition. Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. Applicants additionally must be willing to learn Japanese and must have been born on or after April 2, 1985.

Applications from U.S. citizens living in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Alaska will be accepted through the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle. Other applicants should contact their Japanese Consulate or Embassy for information on how to apply.
