Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies

The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies offers up to one year of research support at the Freie Universität Berlin and is open to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-18th century. Under the umbrella of the program, we offer three fellowship categories. Approximately fourteen fellows are selected for each academic year. All applications must be submitted to the Berlin Program.

The Three Fellowship Categories include:

Berlin Program Fellowships (Dissertation & Postdoc) funded by the FU Berlin: Applicants for a dissertation fellowship must be full-time graduate students who have achieved ABD status by the time the proposed research stay in Berlin begins. Also eligible are Ph.D.s who have received their doctorates within the past two calendar years. Fellowships are awarded for a period between ten to twelve months.

Max Kade Berlin Fellowships (Postdoc): This fellowship offers a stipend of $20,000 for a research stay in Berlin for 10 to 12 months. The support covers living and travel expenses. Eligible are U.S. citizens who have received their doctorates in the last two calendar years.

Kerstin Leitner Berlin Fellowships (Dissertation): The Berlin Program is pleased to be able to offer two additional dissertation fellowships for 2020/21 — the Kerstin Leitner Berlin Fellowships — for Ph.D. candidates from Malawi and China’s inner provinces, e.g. Gansu, Shaanxi, Hubei. Applicants must be full-time graduate students enrolled in a Ph.D. program and have preferably completed all coursework before their fellowship begins. The Kerstin Leitner Berlin Fellowship has a value of EUR 1400 per month and carries a travel reimbursement of EUR 1200 (maximum). In case of equally qualified candidates, female applicants will be given priority.

As the awards vary in their terms & eligibility, so applicants should carefully read the information. All fellowships are awarded for a two semester period must be held for a single continuous period. The number of reapplications is limited to two.
