Knowles Teaching Fellowship

Application Deadline: January 9, 2022, 11:59 PST

The Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is an intensive and cohesive, five-year program that supports early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom. Roughly 35 Teaching Fellowships are awarded annually; the five-year Fellowship is valued at over $150,000. Fellows receive financial support in the form of grants or stipends throughout the year. Professional development grants are available to cover the cost of relevant activities, including workshops, mentoring, practitioner inquiry and Fellow observations.

During the first two years of the Program, Fellows reflect on and deepen their own math or science knowledge, develop the specialized forms of content knowledge needed for teaching, and use that knowledge to create powerful learning opportunities for students. In the fourth year of the Program, Fellows learn increasingly sophisticated ways to examine their teaching, classroom culture and student learning using many kinds of data, and they explore ways to collaborate with school colleagues as co-inquirers. In the final year of the Program, the focus of inquiry shifts from a Fellow’s classroom to the professional community in which they work, as they grapple with their own professional goals and commitments and what it means for them to lead in their specific teaching context.

Eligibility

2022 Fellowships will be awarded to individuals who:

  • Have the capacity and determination to commit to teaching as their primary career;
  • Have earned a degree in a major related to the mathematics or science discipline they intend to teach between 2012 and September 1, 2022;
  • Have earned or will earn a valid state teaching credential/certificate/license that enables them to teach mathematics or science in grades 9–12 in the United States no earlier than January 1, 2017 and no later than September 1, 2022; and
  • Will be entering their first or second year as teacher of record during the 2022–2023 academic year.
    • For the purpose of eligibility, we consider an applicant’s first year of teaching to be the first year in which they teach full time for the full academic year as the teacher-of-record.

Individuals who are not citizens or who hold degrees from outside the United States are eligible for the Knowles Teaching Fellowship. However, they must be committed to teaching science or mathematics in U.S. high schools and possess a valid state teaching credential/certificate/license that enables them to teach grades 9–12 in the United States by September 1, 2022.
