The 2022 Data Science for Social Good summer program brings together data scientists and domain researchers to work on focused, collaborative projects for societal benefit. This year’s projects will leverage data science approaches to address societal challenges in areas such as human services, public policy, health and safety, environmental impacts, transportation, accessibility, social justice, and urban informatics.
After running two successful DSSG programs remotely in 2020 and 2021, the program is considering a hybrid model this year, in which some teams will work in-person on the campus of the University of Washington, and some teams will work remotely from wherever team members are based. This is contingent upon public health guidelines at the time and sufficient interest from applicants. At the time of applying, you will be asked to indicate if you prefer in-person participation or remote participation.
Each student will be part of a team working full-time (i.e. 40 hours/week) on an applied research project that has concrete social relevance and impact. Students are expected to work closely and collaboratively with team members for the duration of the 10-week program.
Projects may involve a range of stakeholders, including academic researchers, government officials, non-profit organizations, and the general public. In addition to project work, students participate in a wide range of data science tutorials, discussion-based workshops, and subject matter talks with experts from outside the program.
There will be an information session for interested students, January 26, 9:00-10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, via Zoom. Register here. A recording of the session will be available following the presentation.
