Graduate Teaching Assistant- PHRMCY 501, 502, and 514 (full academic year)

The Department of Pharmacy has a great TA opportunity for the upcoming academic year. This position is for Autumn 2023, Winter 2024, and Spring 2024. This position is 50% FTE (20 hours per week and no more than 220 hours per quarter) Graduate Teaching Assistantship with appointment from 9/16/23 to 6/15/24

General Duties/Description: PHRMCY 501, 502 and 514 are core courses for UW Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) first year (PY1) students. The PharmD curriculum is a four-year curriculum comprised of coursework in chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, therapeutics, law, patient care, and population health. There are approximately 100 PharmD students in this PY1 cohort.

PHRMCY 501 and 502 are courses that aim to provide a foundation in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to be an effective patient-centered pharmacist provider. Content is designed to facilitate the development of a student’s professional identity and leadership abilities. The course masters are Drs. Jenny Bacci and Rena Gosser. PHRMCY 501 is during the fall quarter on Monday mornings (8:30 – 11:20 am). PHRMCY 502 is during the winter quarter on Monday afternoons (2:30 – 5:20 pm) with limited special sessions on Thursday mornings.

Major TA responsibilities for PHRMCY 501 and 502 include:

  • Total work hours per week = 20 hours
  • Support course masters in grading student assignments and providing feedback (mostly on UW Canvas)
  • Managing course website as needed
  • Triaging student email communication as needed
  • Overseeing office hours and student makeups as needed
  • Attending class sessions
  • Proctoring assessments as needed

PHRMCY 514 is a course that teaches the students how to become experts in reading and critically evaluating medical literature. The course focuses on the fundamentals of Biostatistics with application to the major study designs. A basic course in statistics is a pre-requisite for entry into Pharmacy School. The course master is TBD. PHRMCY 514 is during the spring quarter on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (8:30 – 9:20 am).

Major TA responsibilities for PHRMCY 514 include:

  • Total work hours per week = 20 hours
  • Creating and reviewing one, short Biostatistics homework assignment each week (statistical software is not used; homework involves simple hand-calculations only)
  • Drafting two midterms and one final exam
  • Organizing and keeping up the course website
  • Monitoring class Discussion Board
  • Attending each lecture and discussion hour
  • Holding one TA office hour weekly
  • Assisting the course master in other miscellaneous duties

Requirements: Current Masters or PhD student with good communication skills. Desired – Health Sciences Graduate student.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with academic standing, qualifications, and experience.
