Research Assistant/Associate: Emotion and Epistemic Practice Project, College of Education – W25

Basic Function:
The Research Assistant/Associate (RA) will primarily focus on a qualitative study with the Emotion and Epistemic Practice project. The project is a research study about how truth claims get advanced, evaluated, and built on in the podcast of a right-wing education-focused social movement organization. The project aims to offer a timely analysis of how a reactionary view of reality is constructed in the moment-to-moment scale of social interaction. It will provide education researchers with new insights on contemporary attacks on minoritized communities, educational institutions, and democratic debate.
General Information:
The RA will work closely with Prof. Tanner Vea to co-develop and then follow guidelines for data organization, preparation, and analysis. The 50% FTE position is suitable for a graduate student interested in qualitative research and critical learning sciences research. The position has potential for renewal in Spring quarter depending on interest, performance, and funding availability. The start date for this position is December 16, 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Data Cleaning and Preparation (primary responsibility):
- Download automated transcripts from podcasting platform.
- Clean and format transcripts according to project guidelines.
- Refer to video source material as necessary to ensure transcript quality.
- Data Analysis (secondary responsibility):
- Conduct content logging of podcast episodes.
- Code interaction data.
- Maintain data organization and security.
- Contribute to the interpretation and presentation of findings.
- Writing (as time allows):
- Draft, edit, and finalize research reports.
- Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
- Assisting with project management
General Qualifications:
- Must be a UW master’s or doctoral student enrolled in 10 credits per quarter of employment.
- Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
- Training or experience with qualitative research methods and data analysis.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience with video-based research, interaction analysis, and/or discourse analysis methods.
- Demonstrated skills in project management, coordination, and collaboration.
- Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software.
- Experience with critical research frameworks.
- Interest in and knowledge of literature in the learning sciences.
