Philosophy Teaching Assistantships at UW: Winter 2019

The Department of Philosophy is seeking up to three graduate students for one-quarter Teaching Assistant positions in Winter 2019.

Responsibilities:

The appointment involves serving as a Teaching Assistant for one of these classes: PHIL 102 – Contemporary Moral Problems, PHIL 115 – Practical Reasoning, or PHIL 120 – Introduction to Logic. In general, duties will require you to:

  • lead multiple discussion sections of a large lecture course twice per week, preparing materials for each section and facilitating class discussions
  • attend all main lectures of that course
  • grade and provide feedback on student work
  • hold regular office hours for 2 hours per week
  • hold extra review sessions for exams; obtain room for review
  • manage and respond to course-related email
  • prepare test questions, proctor exams, maintain grading and assignment completion records; calculate quarter grades
  • prepare handout materials
  • place course materials on library reserve
  • attend instructor-TA meetings
  • act as liaison/mediator between student and professor
  • be evaluated and given feedback on your teaching performance

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Teaching Assistant/Predoctoral Teaching Associate I/Predoctoral Teaching Associate II (depending on eligibility).

DATES/ HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT: It is expected that you will work no more than 220 hours total (approximately 20 hours per week) in Winter Quarter (January 7 – March 22, 2019).  Note: grades are due Tuesday, March 26, 2019. The payroll dates for the appointment are from December 16, 2018 to March 15, 2019.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Formally enrolled in a UW graduate degree program for at least 10 credits during Winter 2019
  • Significant background in philosophy coursework; preferably specific to the relevant course

DESIRED:

  • Previous experience teaching philosophy to undergraduates
