Equipment

We are fully equipped for protein biochemistry, enzymology, cell biology and molecular biology. Some of our key equipment includes:

  • Microscopes (see link above for microscopy page)
  • Centrifuges: preparative, ultra, analytical ultra (shared)
  • Incubators and shakers for yeast, bacterial, and mammalian cell culture
  • Laminar flow biosafety cabinet for mammalian cell culture and work with bacterial pathogens
  • Two -70° freezers
  • Avestin continuous flow cell disruptor
  • 3 FPLC systems, 2 refrigerated
  • Nanodrop UV-vis spectrometer
  • Varian-Cary UV-vis spectrometer
  • Hitachi cuvette-based fluorimeter
  • Two Molecular Devices plate-based fluorimeters (Spectramax Gemini XPS and Gemini EM, shared with the Hoppins lab)
  • Perkin-Elmer plate luminometer with robotic plate stacker
  • Wyatt DynaPro III quasielastic light scattering spectrometer
  • Vapro osmometer
  • Analytical and preparative balances
  • pH meters
  • Conductivity meter
  • NIST-traceable high-precision thermometer
  • Plasma cleaner

Additional instrumentation within the Department of Biochemistry:

  • Wyatt SEC-MALS instrument
  • Horiba Jobin-Yvon cuvette-based fluorimeter
  • CD spectrometer
  • Beckman XL-I analytical utracentrifuge
  • Octet and SPR protein interaction instruments

There are, of course, shared or core facilities for CryoEM, mass spectrometry, light microscopy, NMR etc.
