The SIC recently received funding from the UW Student Technology Fee to acquire the following equipment. We are excited to already be using this equipment to enable new student innovations.

• Haas VF-4SS 3+2 Axis Mill
  • This is the largest mill in the Student Innovation Center capable of:
    • Automated integration of CAD and mill control
    • 4 and 5 axis manipulations, which enables accurate milling of complex 3D shapes
    • Automated tool changing for dozens of tools
    • Water cooling, which is important for preventing warping
    • Chip management, which is important for continuous milling
    • Machining in an enclosed work area, which improves safety

• Haas VF-1 3-Axis Mill
  • This mill has many similar capabilities to our 3+2 Axis Haas VF-4SS
    • Automated Integration of CAD, CAM, and mill control
    • Automated tool changing for dozens of tools.
    • Flood cooling, a vital asset fro prevent warping and damage
    • Chip Management, which is important for continuous milling
    • Machining in an enclosed work area, which improves safety
  • This machine has a smaller table than the VF-4SS and 3-Axis Manipulations
    • Smaller table is great for intricate parts multi-part projects.

• ProtoMAX Abrasive Waterjet
  • This is the only waterjet in the Student Innovation Center and only the second on campus that is available for student use. This waterjet enable students to:
    • Cut objects up to 12”x12”x1” made from a wide range of materials (ceramics, metals, plastics, wood, and many more) with ±0.005” accuracy, ±0.003” repeatability.
    • Cut thin materials, make sharp corners, make pierce holes, and make other objects that are challenging to make with mills.
    • Explore more diverse options in surface design, texturing, and tool development in a shorter amount of time while simultaneously preparing them to be more competitive in the job market.
