ACT SMART Initiative

When you think about the men you know — your fathers, brothers, partners and friends — you should know that 1 out of 6 of them will get prostate cancer.

It’s a sobering statistic. If you’re comparing the prevalence and deadliness of cancers that affect U.S. males, only skin cancer affects more men. And only lung cancer kills more men.

More than 241,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
More than 28,000 men will die of prostate cancer this year.
And more than 2.5 million men who’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer are alive in the U.S. today.*

The Act Smart Initiative at the IPCR aims to transform prostate cancer from a disease that causes uncertainty, suffering and death to one in which highly personalized approaches can change men’s lives: preventing prostate cancer for some, eliminating the need for treatment for others, and extending survival for all.

Two Goals, Six Components
Over the next five years, the IPCR has two primary goals for the Act Smart Initiative:

  • To accelerate the discovery of life-changing treatments by making clinical trials and research more nimble and informative, and
  • To enhance care by improving access to state-of-the-art prevention and treatment strategies.

These goals will be fulfilled by undertaking the following projects, explained in the pages
that follow:
Component 1 — Revolutionizing Clinical Trials with ACT-SMART
Component 2 — Testing and Personalizing Therapies With the Tumor Avatar Library
Component 3 — Unlocking the Potential of Genomic Research: Precision Medicine
Component 4 — Creating a Prostate Cancer Prevention Center
Component 5 — Building a Prostate Cancer Network
Component 6 — Engaging Our Communities
