New NSF Computing Award

A new award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will support computational resources for research and teaching at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB). UWB Physical Sciences Division (PSD) faculty member Eric Salathé is the Principle Investigator (PI) for the project CC* Compute: A campus-wide computing resource for research and teaching at the University of Washington Bothell for $395,000 over two years with Co-PIs UWB STEM faculty Joey Shapiro Key and Kristina Hillesland. This award supports access to the University of Washington Hyak computing cluster for faculty and students, including data analysis research for the UWB gravitational wave astronomy research group.

2021 UWB Physics REU

The 2021 Physics REU program has 10 research mentors working with 23 summer research students on gravitational wave astronomy, physics education research, experimental condensed matter physics, and computational physics and astrophysics. For the summer of 2021 we have a hybrid program with students and mentors participating online and on the UWB campus.

Check out the 2021 Physics REU Symposium page to see the student research project posters and the UWB news article for more of the story.

GWANW Student Workshop June 28

Students interested in gravitational wave and astrophysics research are invited to attend the Gravitational Wave Astronomy Northwest (GWANW) student workshop on Monday, June 28. The workshop will include an overview of gravitational wave astronomy and will focus on LIGO, LISA, and NANOGrav tutorials.

See the  AGENDA for more information and register HERE for free. The event will be hosted on Zoom, the link will be sent by email to registered participants. We look forward to connecting with you at the workshop!

Join the STEM Public Outreach Team!

A SPOT presentation

The UWB STEM Public Outreach Team (SPOT) is seeking new Student Ambassadors. Undergraduate students from any major can participate in training and certification to bring STEM presentations and activities to K-14 classrooms and community groups. The current SPOT presentations are Math Adventures: Tessellating with Polygons and Tuning in to Einstein’s Universe. Contact SPOT Program Director Ava Stockman to join the team!

2021 UWB Physics Summer Research Program

The UWB Physics summer research program will host undergraduate research students for 10 weeks during the summer to participate in research projects, professional development activities, and an introduction to research-oriented careers in physics and astronomy. Participants will be matched with faculty mentors based on student interests and will join a cohort of students participating in weekly seminars, workshops, and an introduction to research resources and skills.

Visit the program website for details and application instructions.
