Gravitational Wave Astronomy

The UWB Physics summer research program will host undergraduate research students for 10 weeks during the summer to participate in research projects, professional development activities, and an introduction to research-oriented careers in physics and astronomy. Participants will be matched with faculty mentors based on student interests and will join a cohort of students participating in weekly seminars, workshops, and an introduction to research resources and skills.

The University of Washington Bothell is one of 100 institutions and collaborations to form the American Physical Society (APS) Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Alliance (IDEA). Launched over the summer, the alliance is a support network for physics departments, laboratories, and observatories that want to identify and enact strategies to transform the culture of physics.

The UWB Scholarship, Research, and Creative Practice (SRCP) seed grant program will fund a new project that is a collaboration between the STEM Public Outreach Team (SPOT) and the UW Center for Evaluation & Research for STEM Equity.

We will host a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in gravitational wave astronomy and astrophysics funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Students will work on research projects for 10 weeks this summer, participating in the Gravitational Wave Astronomy Northwest meeting in June and presenting their work at the UWB STEM Student Research Symposium in August.

The UWB Space Public Outreach Team (SPOT) contributes to community engagement including the UWB Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. SPOT trains UWB students to bring space science presentations and activities to local schools, community groups, and education events.
