I’m a Professor of Economics at the University of Washington Tacoma in the Division of Politics, Philosophy and Public Affairs. For three years I wrote bi-weekly columns on economics and public affairs for Tacoma’s The News Tribune. I’ve also published articles in the Seattle Times, The Olympian, and Washington, DC’s The Hill. I’ve also published a book on education policy directed to a general audience (Trapped in Mediocrity, Rowman and Littlefield, 2012). I recently published a memoir (Growing Mangos in the Desert, Apprentice House Press, 2022) based on my ongoing relationship with residents in the village of Cive, Mauritania.
