October 2024 – Carol presented a poster at the Washington State Psychological Association Student Poster Symposium. The poster described a collaboration project with Dr. Scott Murray’s lab looking at Level 2 perspective-taking abilities in children and AI. Congratulations to Carol and her collaborators for receiving the Most Original Study/Research Idea award!
September 2024 – Two new graduate students, Alice Aizza and Siying Zhang, joined the lab!
July 2024 – The LCD Lab goes to the International Congress of Infant Studies conference in Glasgow, Scotland! Bahar presented a poster on the origins of the mental timeline using eye-tracking data from infants. Ishaan presented a poster on spatial language usage in parent-child dyads during storybook reading and play. Carol presented a poster on parent-infant interactions in spatial play and their influence on spatial skill development.
The LCD Lab welcomes new lab manager Claudia Wimsatt! Previous lab manager Sahana Sridhar will be starting a PhD program in developmental psychology at UC Berkeley in fall 2024.
June 2024 – Congratulations to Jasmine Yeung for being awarded an Honors Scholar Research Award to support her undergraduate honors thesis research on how early childhood adversity influences executive function development!
Also congratulations to Dr. Starr for being awarded the Davida Teller Distinguished Faculty mentoring award.

Also in May, the lab welcomes our first visiting graduate student, Alenka Schmid! Alenka is a PhD Candidate at Children’s Hospital Zurich administering executive function interventions on children with congenital heart disease.
March 2024 – The lab goes to the Cognitive Development Society’s Biennial Conference in Pasadena! Bahar presented on the origins of the mental timeline using eye-tracking data, Carol on the role of language input on infant spatial skill development, Ishaan on spatial language production in parent-child dyads during play and storybook reading, and Sahana on the role of early reading ability in the development of mental representations of time and number.
December 2023 – Congratulations to Bahar for passing her qualifying exams! She is now the lab’s first PhD candidate!

December 2022 – Congratulations to Cassie Kim, who was awarded a Mary Gates Research Scholarship to support on her honors thesis research on the influence of language on motion event saliency!
November 2022 – Our baby lab is up and running! We welcomed our first infant participants to the lab.

July 2022 – The LCD Labs says goodbye to Taylor, who is headed off to the University of Iowa to begin a masters program in Speech-Language Pathology. Former honors student Sahana Sridhar joins the lab full-time as our new lab manager.
June 2022 – The LCD Lab has received a 5-year research award from the National Science Foundation titled “Promoting Spatial Skill Development.” The goal of this research is to provide new insights into how spatial language and spatial structuring support the development of spatial skills and STEM readiness.
May 2022 – Congratulations to Wendy Garcia, Elizabeth Li, Sahana Sridhar, Rachel Wilborn, and Yongyan Yue for presenting their research in the Undergraduate Research Symposium and Psychology Honors Poster Session.
April 2022 – Drs. Lola de Hevia and Gisella Decarli visited us from Paris as part of our FACE Foundation collaboration. We had a great time talking about science and showing them around Seattle!
Also in April, the LCD Lab went to Madison, WI for the Cognitive Development Society conference. Dr. Starr gave a talk in the Early Career Symposium about metaphors in language and the mind, and Bahar presented a poster on how the mental timeline supports memory for temporal order.
