About
Mitochondria play a central role in cell bioenergetics, free radical signaling, redox homeostasis, ion regulation, and cell fate determination. Mitochondria dysfunction often accompanies and underlies the pathogenesis of disease. Our lab is interested in elucidating how mitochondrial function, including energy metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, calcium regulation and dynamics, are regulated under pathophysiological conditions. We are also studying whether dysregulation of these mitochondrial functions contributes to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. In particular, we are using multidisciplinary approaches including novel biomarkers and biosensors, systems biology tools and genetic animal models to determine how metabolism and mitochondrial function participate in heart development and stress-induced heart diseases.
Research
  • Cardiovascular bioenergetics and mitochondrial biology
  • Metabolic mechanisms in heart development and physiology
  • Role of mitochondrial dysfunction in heart disease
  • Confocal imaging and in vivo evaluation of mitochondrial function
