And this resurrection into public consciousness of sea chanteys and in particular the chanteys of African people brings to mind the fact that Africans and Afro-Americans and African-Americans played a huge role in seafaring from very early on, especially in the Atlantic. Going from port to port as well as entertaining fellow seamen with song and music of African provenance, they spread the music of Africa in almost covert ways. As with so much else, African contributions to world culture are often ignored or disguised. Thank you for your work. Francophonie has added much to world culture now so dominated by Anglo-American culture. My brother-in-law’s grandmother-in-law from Louisiana still spoke Louisiana French Creole.
