Congratulations to the University of Washington Tacoma Analytics Innovations Club!  They were selected as a winner of the 2020 INFORMS Student Chapter Award at the Cum Laude level.

The University of Washington Tacoma Analytics Innovations Club (AI Club) is led by the Milgard Center for Business Analytics (CBA) and is the University of Washington Tacoma Student Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). The club encourages interest in the field of Analytics Innovation (e.g. Data Analytics, Digital Innovation, Operations Research, Management Sciences, Decision Sciences, Data Sciences, Design Sciences, Descriptive, Diagnostic, Predictive, Prescriptive & Cognitive Analytics, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence). Analytics Innovations Club gives students the opportunity of volunteering for an applied analytics project and helping organizations to solve their problems by providing data-driven insights.

The AI Club had a terrific year volunteering on several pro bono analytics projects in our community for social good, including projects for the Korean Women’s Association, the Washington State Historical Society and for the Washington State Economist.

Yesterday, John Cannon (2019/20 AI Club President) and Michael Turek (2019/20 AI Club Vice President) joined leaders and faculty in the Milgard Center for Business Analytics (CBA) to celebrate their accomplishment and they had the following to share…

What was the best part of your experience leading the AI club as officers?

“The best part of the experience for me was the opportunity to get so many students involved in projects, events, and weekly meetings.  The AI Club was a great forum for people to get together outside of class to discuss the challenges we faced on our applied projects, at work, or interesting techniques that we have learned.  What we were able to accomplish and learn from each other was valuable and rewarding.”  – John Cannon

“The AI club provided me additional opportunities to apply techniques and methodologies learned in the MSBA program, and to do so for the good of the community in working with local non-profits. It also allowed me to grow my network of current and future industry professionals in the region.” – Michael Turek

What advice do you have for future leaders of the AI Club?
“My advice to future AI Club Officers is to continue engaging the community and non-profits.  Offering our knowledge and expertise not only enriches the organizations we work with, but it gives us an opportunity to practice and expand on concepts that we’ve learned in the classroom.” – John Cannon
“My overall recommendation to the current group of officers would be to seize the opportunities! Continue additional consulting projects for community engagement, and develop new mutually beneficial initiatives such as the professional speaker schedule and Business Analytics jobfair.” – Michael Turek
