UW Anatomic & Clinical Pathology Residency Recruitment

Welcome from our Program Directors

We are thrilled that you are interested in applying to our Anatomic Pathology / Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency program at the University of Washington (UW). We are proud to call the University of Washington our home, and think the following points are especially noteworthy:

Excellence in patient care forms the core of our values. Our diagnostic work, research and education all benefit from this focus.

Our residents are smart, driven, and passionate about their work. Our program provides ample opportunity for each trainee to explore their own career path—we are home to 16 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowships, 2 non-ACGME accredited fellowships, 5 hospitals with a large and varied patient population, and over 24 diagnostic service lines and laboratories which allow residents to fully immerse themselves in their AP and CP training.

A dedicated and accomplished faculty who set a life-long example of learning and critical thinking. Plus, we take a friendly and open door approach to our work!

Research and quality improvement are central to our mission. Residents can apply for in-house grants, and we actively and enthusiastically support resident research at a national level. We encourage new and innovative ideas and involve residents in the management of our clinical services.

Where you train as a resident is not a trivial decision. Therefore, we appreciate you making the space in your schedule to interview with us and learn more about our program. We hope that our digital experience through an improved applicant website, pre-recorded videos of training locations, and informal sessions with our trainees will help give you a sense of the culture at UW. We strongly encourage you to reach out to us during your interview season with any additional questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Welcome from the Chiefs!

Hello! We are excited that you are considering our program for your residency training. At UW you will have dedicated training in both anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as exposure to the forefront of research and diagnostics. We strive to have a dedicated support structure and mentorship, and we live in a city that is unmatched in its beauty, access to the outdoors, food and cultural events.

Training here offers exposure to a variety of clinical settings and patient populations. We serve two main hospitals, University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. We also train at the Puget Sound VA Hospital, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and the internationally recognized Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (formerly known as Seattle Cancer Care Alliance). Our program is designed around dedicated year-long blocks of AP and CP training, but you will receive continuous exposure and opportunities to integrate learning from both AP and CP disciplines. Residents and fellows join together, both remotely and in-person, throughout the week for didactics and seminars regardless of where they are rotating. While on AP, you will sign out a mix of general and subspecialty cases, with an impressive array of common and rare cases referred to our institution from around the world. CP training encompasses a set of core rotations through our nationally recognized reference laboratory as well as flexible and dedicated time for research. We offer a spectrum of electives outside of our affiliated teaching institutions. These include our regional blood bank (BloodWorks NW) as well as a global health opportunity at a hospital in Kenya.  Finally, we offer a broad range of fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or appropriate subspecialty boards.

Outside of work, one can enjoy beautiful Seattle and its many museums, restaurants, parks, and lakes with a variety of  activities, including trainee-led wellness outings like hiking, apple picking, ice cream socials, and picnics to build a sense of community and fellowship.

If you have any questions about our program or if we can otherwise be helpful to you as you navigate this process, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us. We wish you all the best in your application season!
