Rome in Residence

Questions

Applying to Rome in Residence

What criteria do you use to evaluate applications? How competitive is this program?

We review your personal statement, GPA, and class standing when evaluating applications. We are interested in students who have a strong personal and academic desire to be in Rome and can articulate that interest in a personal statement. We are looking for students with strong academic records – study abroad is rigorous, it is not a party or a vacation. We are looking for students who demonstrate they understand that as a goal. If we have more students than we can accommodate, we will prioritize juniors and seniors, since these students have less time to study abroad. Winter and spring quarters tend to be more competitive with a greater number of applicants. Fewer students apply for autumn quarter, so we usually have space to accommodate most students who apply.

I was put on the waitlist for Rome in Residence, now what?

  • Rome in Residence tends to be competitive in Winter and Spring Quarters.
  • We usually receive 90-100 completed applications and we have space for about 60 students.
  • If you were placed on the waitlist, there’s a chance you will be offered a spot.
  • Offering students admission from the waitlist depends on how many accepted students commit to the program.
  • Autumn Quarter tends to be less competitive and most students who apply are accepted. Winter and Spring quarters have many more applicants. If you were waitlisted for a term, you can always apply for the next term. Please note that you were waitlisted in your next application. We try to give waitlisted students priority for a following term.

Timeline Information and Next Steps

  • Once students are notified of their acceptance to the program, they have three weeks to commit and sign a payment contract.
  • After that three week mark, we will start accepting students off the waitlist into any open spaces.
  • The Rome in Residence Team determines waitlist priority by class, GPA, and quality of the responses on the study abroad application.
  • You do not need to send any additional information to us if you were placed on the waitlist.

I was accepted to Rome in Residence. Can I defer my acceptance to another quarter?

No. You can withdraw your application and reapply to the desired future quarter. If you mention in your essays that you were previously accepted, we will take this into consideration when reviewing your application the second time.
