Water and Infrastructure Professionals NEW RSO

My name is Mya Schlepp, and I am a junior studying environmental engineering. I am the president of a new club on campus called Water & Infrastructure Professionals (WIPs), affiliated with three professional organizations, including Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association, American Water Works Association, and American Public Works Association.

These organizations are comprised of leading scientists, engineers, policy makers and more, seeking to better the water quality around us.

WIPs will be hosting our kickoff event Nov. 24th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at Loew 205 and we want to extend the invitation to SEFS students. We will be serving dinner and playing water-themed trivia with industry professionals.

Attached is a flyer for the event. Students can RSVP via this link

Endorse STF for portable photosynthesis systems

Hi all,
The Plant Ecophysiology and Modeling lab has prepared a Student Technology Fee (STF) application for new portable photosynthesis systems (LI-COR 6800), which would be available for both research and teaching. You can endorse the proposal here by voting to show support for receiving the funding!
The previous version of the machine, LI6400, is no longer being serviced by the company, and they are offering a trade-in discount for the newer version, which we are hoping to take advantage of. The LI6800 is much easier to operate (touch screen, build in warm up tests, much faster for CO2 response curve etc.) so we’re pitching this as both a great research tool across SEFS, BIOL and other plant labs, as well as for increasing student engagement when teaching physiology in courses. We’ve also requested a small plant chamber and conifer chamber to increase the applicability of the new machines across research topics in the department and university. Let me know if there are any questions and thanks for the support!
Cheers,
Amelia

Society of American Foresters Meeting

Hello ESRM Folks!
UW’s Chapter of the Society of American Foresters will be having our first general meeting on Friday April 11th in Thomson Hall 125 from 4-5pm. At this meeting we will have Professor Tim Billo help lead us through discussions that many of us have likely heard about in our coursework, but may have not yet properly explored with our peers. Topics such as placed based knowledge, what it means to perform responsible land stewardship, and more avenues we may go down. While I’m certain that many of you may have thought about these at length internally and between friends, it is important that we have these conversations as future environmental scientists more openly.
At this meeting new meeting dates and topics as well as field days will be announced. Please come and spread the word. We have a lot planned this quarter!
Sincerely,
The UW SAF Officer Team

Introducing Her Entrepreneurial Rise – A Podcast for Changemakers Brought to you by the WE Lead Student Board

Good morning,

The Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership (WE Lead) program’s  Student Board has launched a brand new podcast for Women’s History Month: Her Entrepreneurial Rise. The podcast is created and hosted by Kelen Tamurian (’26), Director of Marketing and Program Innovation for the Student Board and amplifies the voices of women and marginalized leaders breaking barriers, transforming industries, and redefining leadership, entrepreneurship, and social change.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, WE Lead is collaborating with the Associated Students of the University of Washington’s Gender Equity Commission to bring you a series spotlighting the stories of diverse women founders in technology, health and wellness, sustainability, and activism. This isn’t just a highlight reel—it’s an unfiltered look at the challenges, failures, and breakthroughs that come with building something meaningful. These stories remind us that to make an impact, you don’t have to be perfect—you just have to start

What to Expect:

1. Empowering Stories: Hear from trailblazing women founders about their journeys and challenges.

2. Actionable Advice: Learn how they balance self-care with their professional and personal goals.

3. Equity in Action: Gain insights into how to take up space in a world that doesn’t always make room for women and other marginalized identities to succeed

Her Entrepreneurial Rise will have new episodes twice weekly for the remainder of March/Women’s History Month and can be found on Spotify. You can listen to the first two episodes now, with more to come! Listen to episode 0: Her Entrepreneurial Rise – Breaking Barriers, Building Futures, and episode 1: Inspiring Confidence & Mental Resilience in Young Girls – A Conversation with Jilyne Jarvis of ZGiRLS, and share with any entrepreneurial or innovative students in your world!

Take care,

Winona Kantamaneni (she/her)
