Seats still open in ARCTIC 200 and 101!

Seats are still available in two of the most unique and exciting courses of the quarter! Both taught by Jason Young, senior research scientist with the Technology and Social Change Group at the UW Information School, these two courses are complementary and an excellent introduction to the Arctic region, its peoples, and their impact on international relations and current events.

ARCTIC 200: Indigenous Diplomacies and International Relations in the Arctic (5 credits)

When: Tuesdays/Thursdays, 12:30-2:20pm

Where: GLD room 435

Taught by Jason Young, senior research scientist with the Technology and Social Change Group at the UW Information School, this course emphasizes perspectives of the region’s Indigenous peoples. The Arctic provides an important case study for understanding international relations, given the complexity of geopolitical issues and the strong presence of Indigenous peoples in the region. Introduces Indigenous peoples, languages, and ways of thinking.

Counts towards the Arctic Studies Minor. Fulfills the SSc general education requirement.

ARCTIC 101: Elementary Inuktut: Inuit Language and Culture in Canada (5 credits)

When; Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday, 10:30-11:20am

Where: SAV room 167

For the first time, this course is open to all students — undergraduate and graduate alike! This course develops basic communication skills in both oral and written Inuktut, the Inuit language spoken in Canada. Covers basic history and cultural context of Inuit in Inuit Nunangat, and Inuit communities outside the Arctic. Develops intercultural knowledge and understanding. First in a sequence of three.

Anderson Construction Update – September 13th, 2024

Everyone,

Welcome back to the UW Campus!  For those of you who are new to SEFS or new to the UW campus, Anderson Hall, the home building of our School, has been under construction, and is currently sill expected to reopen in Winter quarter 2026.  Due to construction, everyone who used to be in Anderson has moved out and is in temporary quarters.  SEFS Advising, for example, is in Winkenwerder Hall, and we have different availability than we used to prior to the move.

If you want to learn more about the construction project, you can learn about the project goals here.

BeREAL- Resilient Attitudes and Living (1 credit, CR/NC) – Autumn 2024 – GEN ST 297 X & Y

Hello!
I’m teaching GEN ST 297 X and Y this Fall and have a number of open seats in both sections. If you have students who could benefit from experiencing BeREAL and/or need 1 credit ☺️, please feel free to pass along the details below:
GEN ST 297 X & Y: BeREAL- Resilient Attitudes and Living (1 credit, CR/NC) equips students with cognitive skills to manage stressful emotions and situations, mindfulness skills to strengthen self-awareness, and practices that promote compassion for themselves and others. The course will meet once a week for 50 mins. Weekly reflection assignments are flexible and low stakes, allowing students to engage in a way that invites them to center their learning and well-being needs.
Past students have said:
“I’ve taken a couple of other classes with similar material, and I haven’t been as engaged as I was in this one. Just being aware of my mental state and health helped me regulate a lot more outside of class, which translated to better productivity in my schoolwork, regular work, and everything else I have going on.”
  • GEN ST 297 X (SLN: 16033) Wednesdays, 10:30-11:20 in MGH  082A
  • GEN ST 297 Y (SLN: 16034) Tuesdays, 10:30-11:20 in DEN  111
For questions, please contact sasha9@uw.edu
*This course is typically offered Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarter through General Studies
About the instructor:
Sasha Duttchoudhury (they/them) is the Program Manager at the UW Resilience Lab. As a licensed clinical social worker and seasoned facilitator, Sasha aims to use holistic well-being as a guide to imagine and enact change internally, interpersonally, and systemically. Sasha additionally brings a well-being lens to their work staffing CHID study abroad programs in Mexico City, Mexico and Bangalore, India.
