The Doug-Fir Site was presented by UW Grounds Crew via Tom Erler. This site is located in the southwestern corner of Denny Yard. It contains several Douglas-Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, trees that are aged over 100 years. This area has been mowed to maintain the grass, and to preserve the integrity of the tree roots, a plot is being designed to create an understory.
The Doug-Fir site was created with the perspective of a natural forest setting – a microclimate area for a forest. Sheet-mulching was laid during Spring 2017, and plant were installed during the 2017 – 2018 academic year. Plants were salvaged from sites managed by the UW Grounds along with plants grown at the SER-UW Native Plant Nursery.
This site will be managed by UW Grounds during the summer months with SER-UW volunteers supporting the site during the academic year. The Doug-Fir site will require monitoring for weed removal, watering, and installation of new plants as needed.
