The Doug-Fir Site was presented by UW Grounds Crew via Tom Erler. This site is located in the southwestern corner of Denny Yard. It contains several Douglas-Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, trees that are aged over 100 years. This area has been mowed to maintain the grass, and to preserve the integrity of the tree roots, a plot is being designed to create an understory. The Doug-Fir site was created with the perspective of a natural forest setting – a microclimate area for a forest. Sheet-mulching was laid during Spring 2017, and plant were installed during the 2017 – 2018 academic year. Plants were salvaged from sites managed by the UW Grounds along with plants grown at the SER-UW Native Plant Nursery. This site will be managed by UW Grounds during the summer months with SER-UW volunteers supporting the site during the academic year. The Doug-Fir site will require monitoring for weed removal, watering, and installation of new plants as needed.
In 2023, there is dense foliage throughout the entire site. Stop by this neat site in Denny Yard to check out the work that SER-UW has done!
